50th National Women Chess Championship
P V Nandhidhaa is the National Women Champion
The 50th National Womens Chess Championship 2024 held at Chettinadu Public School, concluded today with a thrilling finale. WGM P V Nandhidhaa of Tamil Nadu outplayed Priyanka Nutakki of Andhra Pradesh on the top board in a Sicilian Rossolimo Defense. Nutakki’s 9th move, involving a King retreat, backfired, forcing her into a compromised position with weaknesses around her King. A determined Nandhidhaa capitalized on this, pressing for victory and securing her maiden National Championship title. She finished with an impressive 9 points.
On another board, IM Padmini Rout’s aggressive opening strategy paid off against Saranya in a Modern Defense game. Saranya lost a pawn on the 20th move and the endgame that followed clearly favored Padmini. The game concluded in 39 moves, with Padmini advancing to 8.5 points.
WIM K Priyanka of Tamil Nadu defeated Nisha Mohota, while Kiran Manisha of LIC overcame Keerti Shree Reddy. Both Priyanka and Kiran joined Padmini in second place with 8.5 points each. K Priyanka secured second place overall, while IM Padmini Rout finished third.
WGM Mary Ann Gomes of PSPB fought hard against Varshini but saw her advantage slip away as the pieces were gradually exchanged. The game ended in a draw after 61 moves.
The prize distribution ceremony was graced by IAS Ayush Venkat Vats, Sub-Collector of Devakottai, along with Thiru. Stephen Balasamy, General Secretary of TNSCA, Thiru. S P Kumaresan, Chairman of Chettinadu Public School, and Thiru. K Arunkumar, Vice Chairman of Chettinadu Public School, among other officials. In his address, the Sub-Collector praised India’s recent double medal-winning performance in the Olympiad and expressed hope that tournaments like these would continue to nurture the country’s chess talents. Thiru. S. P. Kumaresan, the Chairman, also wished the participants well, stating that this championship would remain etched in their memories.
