Sriram, Adarsh Uppala of Telangana wins the 25th IM Norm
25th Tamil Nadu IM Norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2024
The 25th edition of Tamil Nadu State IM Norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2024 was organised by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association in a grand manner at Hotel Chess Le Palace, Porur, Chennai from 22nd to 28th August, 2024.
This single round robin tournament all play all carried $1000 as total prize fund. Time control for the tournament was 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment from 1st move for 9 rounds. GM Manik Mikulas of Slovakia, GM Annageldyev Orazly of Turkmenistan, IM Slizhevsky Alexander and IM Gochelashvili David both from Russia and WGM Uuriintuya Uurtsaikh of Mongolia where the five foreign players. FM Daakshin Arun, FM Harshad S, Adharsh K are from Tamil Nadu whereas FM Jaiveer Mahendru and Sriram Adarsh Uppala completing the Indian IM norm seekers list.
Earlier the tournament was inaugurated by Grandmaster Karthikeyan Murali by making the formal first move against IM Slizhevsky Alexander of Russia in presence of Thiru Stephen Balasamy P, Tournament Director cum General Secretary, TNSCA, Thiru Ephrame M, Tournament Coordinator and Vice President, TNSCA, Thiru Srinivasan R, Treasurer, TNSCA and IA & FI Bhaskar V, chief arbiter, 25th IM Norm tournament.
Master Sriram, Adarsh Uppala of Telangana made a clear win against International Master Gochelashvili, David of Russia on round 1 and at round 6 made another win against Women Grandmaster Uuriintuya Uurtsaikh of Mongolia to maintain his lead with 4.5 points out of 6 rounds. International Master Slizhevsky, Alexander of Russia with his solid game was unbeaten till round 7 and FM Harshad S of Tamil Nadu had eight draws. Grandmaster Manik Mikulas suffered a lost in the hands of FM Daakshin Arun of Tamil Nadu on round 5. Master Jaiveer Mahendru of Maharashtra out played his opponent WGM Uuriintuya Uurtsaikh to make it a point on round 5.
On the penultimate round Master Sriram made a clear win against GM Annageldyev Orazly and took the sole lead leaving two International Master back.
In the nail-biting final round, Master Sriram took Master Harshad with black pieces which ended in his favour. Sriram, Adarsh Uppala remained unbeaten and achieved his maiden IM Norm. with 7 points, he lifted the title and winner’s purse of $500 USD.
With 6 points each IM Slizhevsky Alexander and IM Gochelashvili David both from Russia tied for second position buth better tie breaks helped IM Slizhevsky Alexander for second place and IM Gochelashvili David stood 2nd & 3rd respectively and carried home $300 USD and $200 USD each.
