Nanjil 1st All India FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament was organized by Nanjil Chess Club. The event attracted 259 entries from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puduchery which included 131 international fide rated players. Earlier the tournament was inaugurated by Mr.Issac, Senior Manager, Canara Bank here at A.S.T.Kalyana Mandapam, Meenakshipuram, and Nagercoil on 3rd Nov 2017. Kunal M was the top seed of this tournament. The participation of prominent players like Ram S Krishnan,( BSNL), Syed Anwar Shazuli, Phoobalan and Gunasekaran from ICF added beauty and strength for this event. Seeded players sailed smoothly up to 4th round. Kunal M and Manigandan S S shared the lead with full points at the end of 5th round. Six players shared the 2nd spot with 4.5 points each. In the 6th round. Kunal and Manigandan drew with each other. The victory of Phooblan P (ICF), Hirthickesh P R (TN) and Anikumar O T (kerala) took them to join with the leaders on 5.5 points each. At the end of the penultimate round players on top 3 tables drew with each other, and on 4th table Ram S Krishnan beat Genish Prakash J and moved to the final round with other leaders on 6 points each. After a tough battle between these players Kunal, Hirthickesh and Dharmaraj finished with 7 points each. But better tie break helped kunal to clinch the title. Hirthickesh P R and Dharmaraj P were in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
The Chief Guests Mr. M. udhaya Kumar, Udaya Hardwares and Mr. P.Nagarajan, Vice Principal of DMI College of Engineering, Aralvaimozhi distributed the prizes to the winner in the presence of Mr. A.F. Rex, Secretary, Kanyakumari District Chess Association, Mr. R.Johnny Roy, Secretary Nanjil Chess Club, Mr.M.Sekar, President and Mr.S.John Ramesh, Treasurer of Nanjil Chess Club. The tournament concluded in a grand manner.
