IM Srihari emerges 14th Chennai Open Champion 2023
India’s rising International Master Srihari L R (8.5) held GM Fedorov Alexei (7.5) to a draw, emerging the champion in the 14th Chennai Open International Grandmaster Chess tournament 2023 for Sakthi Group Dr N Mahalingam trophy at Hotel Ambassador Pallava, Chennai here today. Srihari takes the winner’s cheque of Rs 400000 (Rupees four lakhs only) along with a handsome Champions trophy. Taking the first runner-up spot with 8.0 points along with a cash award of Rs 300000 (Rupees three lakhs only) was GM Nguyen Duc Hoa of Vietnam.
Champion Srihari played consistently, scoring seven wins and conceding three draws on way to the title. With two GM Norms to his credit, Srihari needs to touch an ELO rating of 2500 and achieve his third and final GM Norm to complete his Grandmaster title requirement.
Sharing the second place behind Srihari were Grandmaster Nguyen Duc Hoa (Vietnam), Aakash G (India), Savchenko Boris (Russia), Podolchenko Evgeniy (Belarus) with 8.0 points.
In a glittering closing ceremony 60 cash prizes to the tune of Rs 20 lakhs were awarded to the winners by Chief Guest Shri A X Alexander IPS (Retd) , former Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu. Present in the dais were Shri D V Sundar, Vice President, FIDE, Shri B Murugavel Vice President TNSCA, Organising Secretary, Shri P Stephen Balasamy, General Secretary, TNSCA, Tournament Director.
