21st Adyar Times FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament 2023

The traditional Adyar Times FIDE rated open chess tournament turned 21 this year. This famous event organised by the Tamil Nadu Chess Association is being sponsored by Adyar Times a neighbourhood newspaper. Total prize was Rs.2.5 lakhs and glittering trophies were awards to age group categories. Tournament was conducted under Swiss system for 8 rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment from move no.1. This year 513 players, the highest ever covering 5 national federations namely Bangladesh, England, Newzealand, U.S.A. and India entered the fray for the event held from 25th to 28th August 2023. The venue was centrally located Bala Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School a popular institution in the south Chennai.
T Hari Ganesh of Vellammal Vidhyalaya, Guduvancherry, Chennai emerged as the champion and lifted the Adyar Times trophy and carried home the winner’s purse of Rs.35000/-. The champion targeted 7.5 points out of possible 8 and tied for the first place. Both master Hari Ganesh and FM Vinoth Kumar tied for the first place and better tie breaks held Master Hari Ganesh to lift the glittering 21st Adyar Times Trophy. The third place was secured by P.Kavishvaran who had scored 7 points in a six way tie.
In a colourfull closing ceremony Shri. Janakan, Managing Editor, Adyar Times felicitated the winners and gave away the cash prizes and trophies in the presence of Dr. Srinivasa Raghavan, Principal, BVM School and officials from TNSCA.
