Tamil Nadu IM Norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournaments
50 Tournaments in One Year
Chess in India, especially in Tamil Nadu state, is booming by leaps and bounds. The Chess Olympiad 2022 organized at Chennai and sponsored by the Tamil Nadu state government turned to be a great success. The state is reaping the benefits of the Olympiad now – D. Gukesh, currently world no.8, has surpassed the five times world champion Vishy Anand in rating and R Praggnaanandhaa recently reached the finals of the World Cup and moved within top 20 players of the world. The top three rated Indians are from Tamil Nadu. This is all possible, because of the relentless hard work by the players and also the excellent planning and administration by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association.
India is organising many grandmaster norm tournaments nowadays, which will witness the growth of the number of GMs in the country. Besides, many Indian and Tamil Nadu players are travelling abroad in pursuit of the norms, spending several lakhs of rupees for each of their foreign trip. Tamil Nadu State Chess Association and its president Dr. M. Manickam have a novel and innovative idea of organising 50 closed circuit IM norm chess tournaments in one year, which will also benefit the potential players from our state, spending only a couple of thousand rupees to achieve the said norms.
Each tournament will be of 10 players and nine rounds, comprising four or five foreign players. Most of the tournaments will be from Monday to Saturday. The time control will be 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move. 1st, 5th and 6th days will have single rounds and other days will have double rounds.
The series of tournaments is scheduled to commence on 16th October and the first ten tournaments have been already planned till the end of December 2023. The tentative schedule is as follows:
