Abhinessh S of Trichy and Jyothsna L of NLC emerged champions at the spacious Saranathan Academy of Higher Education, Alunthur, Trichy which saw the prestigious 45th Tamil Nadu State Sub Junior (Under – 15) & the 32nd Tamil Nadu State Sub Junior (Under – 15) Girls Chess Championship 2019 conclude on Sunday, 12th May 2019. The record number of entries saw tie-breaks for the title on both the sections.
Both Abhinessh and Rathneesh had seven wins and two draws, but a superior tie-break score gave the Trichy lad the title with 8.0 points. Sharing the third spot with four other players was top-seed Candidate Master Rohith Krishna S of Chennai. Three draws on way to the summit pulled Rohith down to the third place at 7.5 points.
The Girls section the battle was more close, with top-seed Jyothsna (NLC) emerging the winner in a five-way-tie at 7.5 points. Joining her on the top were Varsha Ramesh, Divyabharathi Masanam (both Chennai), Mohana R, Sandhya S (both Kanchi) in that order of tie-break.
Earlier, Chief Guest Dr. Gayathri Mathrubootham made the symbolic first move against local star Ms. Cuba Punitha Vilvam inaugurating the tournament. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Gayathri, herself a baseball player in younger years, said, “It is important to keep oneself sharp, as reflexes matter in sports, just as a wood cutter keeps his saw sharp.”
The closing ceremony saw a total of 50 prizes being distributed by Dr. Sundar, former Professor, Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Trichy. Twenty prizes went for the Open section and thirty special category prizes were awarded to the other prize winners. Present in the dais were Shri. R K Balagunasekaran, Joint Secretary, Tamil Nadu State chess Association, Shri. S Abdul Nazer, Joint Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, Dr. D Valavan, Principal, Saranathan College of Engineering, Chief Arbiter R R Vasudevan and Mr. S Ravindran, Patron, Trichy District Chess Association.
The tournament saw record number of entries adding up to 380 in the Open section and 196 in the Girls Section. This nine round Swiss event is a qualifier for the National Sub Junior Chess Championships 2019 to be held in Tiruchengode.
Final Placing (Open): 1-2 Abhinessh S (Trichy), Rathneesh R (Chennai) 8.0, 3-7 Rohith Krishna S, Ayyappan P Santhana Prabhu (both Chennai), Raghul Saro S (Tanjore), Krishan A (Chennai), Aakash G (Coimbatore) 7.5, 8-`10 Dinesh Kumar Jaganathan, Ayushh Ravikumar (both Chennai), Aswath S (Kanyakumari) 7.0 pts.
