Top seed Russian Grandmaster Savchenko Boris (8.5), with superior tie-break edged out International Master Nitin Senthilvel (India) emerging the Chennai Open 2022 champion after the tenth round in the 13th Chennai Open International Grandmaster Chess Tournament 2022 for Sakthi Group Dr Mahalingam Trophy at Hotel Ambassador Pallava, Egmore, Chennai here today.
Tournament leader Nitin accepted an early draw offer from GM Federov Alexei (Belarus) settling down for 8.5 points. The top board draw, gave Savchenko Boris an opportunity to catch Nitin, which the Russian promptly did, scoring a hard fought win over IM Aronyak Ghosh. GM Savchenko, received the glittering Chennai Open 2022 trophy and a cash award of Rs. 3,00,000 (Rupees three lakhs only), while the Runner-Up IM Nitin received Rs. 2,00,000 (Rupees two lakhs only).
The 275 player 10 round Swiss tournament has the participation of 11 Grandmasters and 14 International Masters among 36 titled players. The total prize money of Rs.15,00,000/- (Rupees fifteen lakhs only) spread over 55 cash prizes were distributed by Chief Guest Dr M Manickam, President, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association. Present in the dais were Shri V Hariharan, General Secretary In-charge, TNSCA, Shri Nitin Shenvi, Chief Arbiter, Shri B Murugavel.
