Chennai based Grandmaster Venkatesh M R (6.5) stood right behind the leader, sharing the second spot with GMs Ponkratov Pavel (Rus), Martinez Alcantara Jose Eduardo (Per), Yudin Sergei (Rus), Aleksandrov Aleksej (Blr), Rozum Ivan (Rus), Jubin Jimmy (Ind), Stupak Kirill (Blr) and Goganov Aleksey (Rus). The race for International Master Norms picked up as Harshavardhan G B and Jubin Jimmy improved their chances with just two rounds to go. Harsha held Indonesian IM Taher to a draw, while Jubin defeated Grandmaster Vasquez Schroeder Rodrigo of Chile in marathon game. The following four players viz., Pranav V, Rohit Krishna S, Harshavardhan G B and Jubin Jimmy require a draw in the ninth and penultimate round tomorrow to achieve their International Master Norm. This ten round Swiss tournament that carries a total prize money of Rs. 15,00,000 (Rupees fifteen lakhs only) concludes on Saturday 25th January, 2020.
