The Sivam Children Hospital All India FIDE Rapid Rated chess tournament was organised by Sivakasi Chess Club at Arasan Ganesan Kalyanamandapam on 2nd and 3rd July 2016. IM P. Shyaam Nikhil of Tamil Nadu headed the list comprising 224 players from TN, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala.
Shyaam conceded only draw to young Dhanush Bharadwaj of Karnataka in his tally of 8.5 points from nine games. After six rounds, former national blitz champion Ram S Krishnan of BSNL led the field with 6 points, followed by Shyaam, TS Ravi, former TN State junior champion P. Maheswaran of Sivakasi Chess Club, representing Postal Services, Boopathy Raja of Virudhunagar district and Dhanush Bharadwaj. Maheswaran held Ram to a draw in the seventh round which helped Shyam and Ravi to join Ram at the top.
At the end of eighth round, Shyaam shot into lead with a fluent win over P. Yutesh of TN, as the game between Ravi and Ram ended in a draw. In the final round battle between the two international masters, Shyaam inflicted a defeat on Ravi to win the title comfortably. He was one point ahead of his four nearest rivals. Dilip Kumar of Chennai came from behind to hold Ram to collect 7.5 points and thirteen year old S Suganthan of Tirunelveli also played well to score 7.5 points. With more number of wins, they were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively, followed by Ram and Maheswaran.
Sri. G. Ramamoorthy, former Vice President of TN State Chess Association was the chief guest. Mrs. Brinda Ragavan, Correspondent of Renganayagi Varatharaj College of Engineering and industrialist GV Karthik were the guests of honour. Earlier, Dr. K. Kathiravan, Chairman of Sivakasi Municipality and the sponsor of the event inaugurated the tournament.
