Sriram Adarsh Uppala wins 28th IM Norm
28th TN IM Norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament, 2024
National Under 17 champion Sriram Adarsh Uppala of Telangana lifted the 28th Tamil Nadu IM Norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament, 2024 Trophy when he delivered a hard fought victory over IM Gochelashvilli David (Russia) in the ninth and final round. By targeting the requisite 7 points from nine rounds the champion also secured his second IM norm. He carried home the winner’s purse of $500 US dollars. Earlier he had won the 25th edition in Chennai and also pocketed his maiden IM Norm.
In a two way tie for the second place Dhruva Thota on account of his better tie break finished as first runner up with 6 points. In the final encounter between Dhruva Thota and Aakash G, the latter squandered away his chances of obtaining maiden IM norm when he messed up in the French defense and lost after 32 moves. Aakash G also with 6 points was the second runner up.
In a closing ceremony India’s latest Grandmaster M Pranesh of Karaikudi distributed the prizes. Dr. M Manickam, President, TNSCA felicitated the winners. Also guests present in this occasion were Thiru. V. Vijayaraghavan, Vice President TNSCA, Thiru. K Dhanasekar, Secretary, Coimbatore DCA, Thiru. S Paul Arokia Raj, Tournament Coordinator and Thiru. R Chandra Mouli, Chief Arbiter.
