Sakthi Group 32nd Tamil Nau IM Norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament
G.Akash and Jinan Joman start off well
FIDE Master G.Akash of Coimbatore began his campaign for his third and final International Master Norm when he scored a brilliant victory over IM Palencia Morales of Colombia in the inaugural round of the Sakthi Group 32nd Tamil Nadu IM Norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament organized by Tamil Nadu State Chess Association at Hotel Chennai Le Palace, Porur, Chennai. Playing black FM G Akash employed his pet French defense classical variation to grab white’s Knight Pawn on move no.14. He converted this material advantage into exchange up ending and on move no.36 when he was about to capture white’s Knight the visiting IM from Columbia resigned the game. The school Federation of India under 14 champion Akash now needs 5.5 points from the remaining 8 rounds to join the elite club of International Masters.
FM Jinan Joman who also holds two IM norm and needs a final norm from this tournament played an enterprising game against IM Oblitas with black pieces in London system. He made brilliant maneuvers with his double Rook and Knight to trap white King in the middle of the board. When it was a mate in one combination Otero tendered his resignation on move no.34.
IM Claveria Rahul of Argentina and CM Mirthyunjay Mahadevan of Chennai also settled for a 30 moves draw in a reversed King’s Indian game. Though Mirthyunjay obtained an advantage in the early part of the game he could not convert it into a win due to shortage of time in his chess clock.
The game between Asian under 12 Silver Medalist Master Siddhanth Poonja of Bangalore and only Grandmaster of the event GM Podolchenkp Evgently from Belarus ended in a draw exactly on move no. 30 with a dry note. Same way IM Otero Acosta of Cuba and FM Ashwin Sairam of Chennai decided to settled for a draw after finding no headway.

Earlier the 32nd edition of this popular IM Norm Closed Circuit Tournament was inaugurated by the ace Athlete Dr. R. Natarajan, I.R.S., Deputy commissioner, Customs, Chenani and G.S.T by making a formal move against IM Claveria Rahul of Argentina in presence of all players and TNSCA officials.
