28th Tamil Nadu State Under 17 Open & Girls Chess Championship 2017 (FIDE Rated) was held from 8.05.2017 to 12.05.2017, organized by Ancient Chess Academy at Kamala Subramaniam Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur. The inauguration function was held on 8th May 2017. The presidential address was delivered by Mr. A. Gerald Phingnora Raj, President of Thanjavur District Chess Association. Chief Guest of the event was Rtn. V. Subramaniam, Asst. Governor, RI Dist. 2981 and Trustee, KSMHSS. Guest of Honour for the inauguration was Rtn. N. Venkatajalapathi, District Executive Secretary, RI Dist. 2981. Welcome address was delivered by Mr. T. Shyam Sundar, Treasurer, Ancient Chess Academy, Thanjavur. The dignitaries present on the dais were Mr. Rtn. G. Senguttuvan, Asst. Governor, RI Dist. 2981, Mr. Rtn. R.K. Balagunashekaran, Joint Secretary, Mr. V.S. Sriman, International Arbiter and Chief Arbiter of this event, Mr. R.P. Senthil Kumaran, Secretary, Thanjavur District Chess Association. Vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. M. Totally 231 players participated in 28th Tamil Nadu State Under 17 Open Chess Championship 2017 and 88 players participated in 28th Tamil Nadu State Under 17 Girls Chess Championship 2017. This tournament happens to be record in number of participation with 321 players participating from 29 districts and 1 special unit NLC. In the Open section, 71 rated players and in the Girls section, 35 rated players participated.
Top ten prize winners in Open and Girls section were awarded with cash prizes worth Rs. 26,400/-. Further 5 prizes were given to Under 11, 13 and 15 category in both Open and Girls section separately.
The valedictory function was held on 12th May 2017. Chief Guest of the event was Mr. P.K.V.S.Vasan, President, Chamber of Commerce & Industries, Thanjavur.
