The 1stTeekay Chess Centre State level chess tournament was organised at Subbaiah Vidyalayam, Thoothukudi on 12th and 13th November 2016. About 450 players participated in the two days, nine round event. Ram S Krishnan, a former National Rapid Champion was the top seed in the tournament, followed by TS Nandhakumar of Hosur. All the top players played true to their seeding until the fifth round.
In the sixth round, B. Selvamurugan of Madurai toppled the second seeded Nandhakumar and S Ruban Sanjay of Virudhunagar defeated P. Dharmaraj of Thoothukudi. Subash Mathivanan of Tirunelveli also lost to Rutherford of Kanyakumari in this round. In the seventh round, Ram S Krishnan defeated Ruban Sanjay and Selvamurugan won the game against T Chinnadurai of Thoothukudi, to emerge joint leaders after seven rounds with seven points each. Sivasubramnaian Manoj of Tirunelveli and Rutherford of Kanyakumari had scored 6.5 points each.
Both Ram overcame Selvamurugan to be the only player who had scored wins in all eight rounds. Sivasubramanian Manoj of Tirunelveli closely followed him with 7.5 points. Ram agreed for a formal draw with Manoj in the final round to win the tournament with 6.5 points. Four players – P. Rajasekaran of Thoothukudi, B Selvamurugan of Madurai, T. Chinnadurai of Thoothukudi and Manoj scored 8 points each and finished second to fifth respectively.
Smt. Meenakumari, Headmistress of KamatchiVidyalaya was the chief guest for the final day function. Sri. R. Rengarajan, treasurer, Thoothukudi District CA and Sri. John BS Demel, Joint Secretary of TDCA offered felicitations.
