Rathanvel sole lead – National Under – 17 Open Chess Championship

Dr. N.Mahalaingam 28th National Under-17 Open & Girls Chess Championship 2017, KCT College, Coimbatore

Rathanvel of Tamil Nadu took the sole lead by winning his game against U-11 National Champion Manish Anto Cristiano of Tamil Nadu with 5points at the end of 5th round. His strong attack in the middlegame of Najdorf opening gave him an extra piece in 29th move which he soon converted into victory. Mitrabha Guha of West Bengal and Raja Rithvik of Telangana share the second spot with 4.5 pts. In the girls section overnight leader Niharika lost to topseed Chitlange Sakshi of Maharashtra who jointly lead the tournament with Tejaswini Sagar of Gujarat with 4.5 points out of 5 rounds. Sakshi with the white pieces playing against Kings’ Indian Defence, her central pawns and active minor pieces won an exchange up in the 25th move. Then after White exchanged all the pieces and won the game in 68 moves.
