Delhi Open winner GM Pantsulaia Levan (Georgia) defeated tournament leader Grandmaster Lugovskoy Maxim (Russia) snatching the lead with 8 points after the ninth and penultimate round in the 11th Chennai Open International Grandmaster Chess tournament 2019 for Sakthi Group Dr N Mahalingam Trophy at Novotel IBIS OMR Hotel, Sholinganallur, Chennai here today. Sharing the second spot with 7.5 points was Grandmaster Lugovskoy Maxim (Russia).
TN lad M Pranesh shocked GM Erigaisi Arjun, thereby achieving his International Master Norm in style. Pranesh required a draw for his International Master Norm, but went on to defeat Erigaisi Arjun in a Sicilian game that lasted 62 moves.
Earlier, tournament leader Lugovskoy (Russia) went down to in-form Pantsulaia (Georgia) in the top board. Employing the “c3” Sicilian, Pantsulaia grabbed the initiative with original middle game play. The sheer energy he brought into his pieces undid Lugovskoy, who lost the plot in a rook and pawn ending.
Saurabh Anand continued his good form, as he brought down International Master Shyaamnikhil, increasing his Norm chances. Shyaamnikhil’s trading off his queen for a rook and a minor piece, proved inadequate compensation, as Saurabh played cool and collected the full point after 50 moves.
This ten round Swiss event carries a prize fund of Rupees 15 lakhs with 55 prizes in the Open & Category sections. The final round is scheduled for tomorrow Friday, 25th Jan,2019 at 10 AM followed by the prize distribution function at 4 PM.
