The 22nd SPIC FIDE Rated Chess Tournament had attracted 255 players in medallist section from 6 states, 1 special unit (Railways) and a union territory (Puducherry) and 169 players in Non medallist section. This event was sponsored by SPIC Central Sports Council and conducted by Tuticorin District Chess Association, offered a prize fund more than 87,000 for both sections. There are 25 main prizes in medallist and 15 main prizes in non-medallist sections. In addition, category prizes as special prizes were given. The winner in medallist section bagged Rs.25, 000/- as the first prize along with a glittering trophy. The winner in non-medallist section got Rs.2, 000 as the first prize. As usual the Playing hall and nice accommodation made the players to get interest to come again and again. The event was declared open by the inaugural move made by Sri K S Gnanasekar IRS Assistant Commissioner customs Tuticorin. Mr.Muthumanokaran VP of Spic who is the president of Tuticorin District Chess Association presided over the function. Top seed, Syed Anwar Shazuli of ICF emerged sole lead from 7th round to 11th round and won the Championship with 10 points. He took the cash prize of 25,000 thousand with trophy. In non-medallist section P.Vijay of Erode was the sole leader from 6th to 9th round. At the end of the 10th round R.S.Subramanian of Tirunelveli stopped his race and won the championship with 9.5 points. He got Rs.2, 000 as first prize. The organising team of Mr.V.S.Narasimhan,Organizing secretary , the treasurer TDCA Mr.D.Jeyaseelan Rathinam, Mr.John BS Demel tournament committee member, Advisory committee members Sri R.Muthu Manoharan VP of Spic also president of TDCA and Sri.S.Nallamuthu president, Spic central sports council made the tournament in grand manner. The team of arbiters Mrs. Bhuvana FA, A.C.Siva, K. Boobalan Parthasarathy and Mrs.Vijayalakshmi helped me to conduct and conclude this tournament in a well manner without any single dispute. The PD function was graced by Sri S.Paramasivam, officer on special duty (HWP) who distributed the prizes. The special invitee International Master, Arjuna awardee Manuel Aaron, native of Tuticorin District by birth, suggested raising the prize amount into one lakh in next year. Sri Jayaseelan Rathinam, treasurer TDCA delivered the vote of thanks.
