The 22nd TN State Under 13 Boys and Girls chess championship was held at Hindusthan College Arts & Science from 9th of Aug to 15th of August under the aegis of TN State Chess Association and organized by the Coimbatore District Chess Association. The one week event had attracted around 220 entries in both the sections. G Akash of Chennai, the reigning under 25 champion and Michelle Catherina of Chennai , the current under 25 girls champion were the top seeds in their respective sections. Earlier the tournament was inaugurated by Dr. Murugavel, Physical Director of Bharathiar University , Coimbatore.
A total number of 52 rated players competed in this challenging event.Particpants from around 19 districts and 9 affiliated units were vying for the honours. In the girls section Michelle won the event comfortably, unchallenged and lead the event throughout. In the boys section the leads changed hands when Osama Salim of Chennai lost to Mugil Jayavel of Chennai in the 7th round. Subsequently Kaushik took the lead from Mugil and Vasantha Ruba Varman joined Kaushik by beating Osama. In the 9th round Kaushik overcame Vasanth’s challenge , but the top seed G Akash was closely following the leader. Akash justified his billing , putting his nose near the winning post by beating both Kaushik and Vasanth Ruba Varman in the 10th and 11th rounds to clinch the title.
The Management of Hindusthan Educational Institutions extended their support in all possible manners , despite being the host of first chess event in this campus. The organizers Coimbatore Dt Chess Assn. made the players happy by increasing the number of prizes to 20 in boys section and 15 in the girls section, higher than the previous editions. The players had the glimpse of former President of India Shri A P J Abdul Kalam , who visited the campus on 13.08.2009 to honour the scholars of the institutions.
The Prize distribution function was graced by the presence of Dy.Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore Mrs Kamini IPS and Shri K Muralimohan, Gen.Secy, TNSCA and Mrs.Sarasuwathy Kannaiyan , the Secretary of Institutions. Mr. Karunanidhi , Physical Director and the co-ordinator of the event proposed the vote of thanks.
