Former Olympian and Indian Railway’s star Diwakar Prasad Singh lifted the glittering Adyar Times trophy when he signed a peace treaty in five moves against Tamil Nadu state Junior champion M.Muthu Alagappa in the tenth and the final round of the ninth Adyar Times FIDE rated open chess tournament which got concluded today morning in Chennai. The 31 year old Jharkhand born D.P.Singh who has migrated to Chennai choosing his career with Southern Railway has usurped this coveted title in the year 2006 too. By winning this prestigious Adyar Trophy D.P.Singh is becoming richer by Rupees twenty five thousand. D.P.Singh with an ELO rating of 2286 was seeded fourth in this tournament remained undefeated in the championship. He notched up a total of 9 points from ten rounds. Taking up sole lead in the seventh round he conceded only two draws against Jitendra Vel S in the fifth round and Muthu Alagappan in the final round D.P. Singh came to limelight when he got qualified in the National ‘A’ Championship to find a berth in the six member Indian squad which represented the country in the Greece Olympiad. T.U.Naveen Kanna of Anna University with 8.5 points was the runner up with 8.5 points. He carried home a cash prize of Fifteen thousand rupees. In a four way tie for the third place M.V.Lakshmi Narayana of Kodaikanal with 8 points was adjudged third on account of his higher Buchholz score. He was rewarded with 9000 rupees. India’s First International Master & Arjuna Awardee Manuel Aaron and Lion P.N. Bhavani Shankar, Chairman, Madras South Lions Charitable Trust gave away the Prizes to the winners.
