Mohanpriya triumphs

J. Mohana Priya of Kanchi District won the 23rd State junior (under-19) girls’ FIDE-rated chess championship conducted by Solar Chess Club, a part of the D.S.K.S. Subramania Iyer Trust, at the SDAT Tennis Stadium.

Mohana, who was the sole leader after nine rounds, drew with N. Akshaya and R. Preethi in Tuesday’s rounds. She secured nine points out of a possible 11 to claim victory.

Chennai’s Michelle Catherina drew with the top-seeded R. Preethi to finish second with eight points. A. Akshaya of Tiruvallur held S. Athirai of Dindigul to a draw to bag the third prize.

Apart from the V.V. Rajamani Trophy and the K.S. Ramani Trophy, Mohana received a cash award of Rs. 5,000. Final standings: 1. J. Mohana Priya (9); 2. Michelle Catherina (8); 3. A. Akshaya (7.5); 4. N. Akshaya (7.5); 5. J. Janani (7).
