Chennai schoolboy P.Karthikeyan won the 1st Thrissur International FIDE Rating Tournament that took place from April 15-20 in the cultural capital of Kerala.
In many ways Karthikeyan was destined to win, since though he offered draws, his opponents did not take them. They lost and paved the way for his splendid triumph. In the final round, he upset IM Saptarshi Roy of Kolkata to win the tourney with 8.5 points. The tournament was dominated by Ram S Krishnan, a former University of Madras player who led until the eighth round. Ram's defeat to Saptarshi Roy in the ninth round opened up the event. In the final round, Chennai players won the top four places with Ram playing a draw against B.S.Sivanandan and Konguvel taking the third place by defeating Kerala's second IM K.Ratnakaran.
Chennai players dominating the podium in Kerala is not new. In the previous Cusat FIDE Rating event at Kochi, three different Chennai players took the top three places. The younger brigade of Chennai players is certainly making its presence across India. This time they took the top four places.
The first edition of this event was announced four months prior and it benefited with a huge response of 214 players from all over India and also from Arunachal Pradesh. And a good 109 of them were rated. This was Thrissur's first FIDE Rating event. Dusthageer Ibrahim, the teenaged Madurai boy shocked top seed IM Saptarshi Roy in the fourth round. Dusthageer had won the SPIC FIDE Rated Tournament in Tuticorin last year and many would remember it.
Sreekumar, President of the Thrissur Jilla Panchayath distributed the prizes in the closing ceremony while K.Radhakrishnan, Hon. Speaker of the Kerala Assembly inaugurated the tournament. The show was organised by N.V.Balagopalan, Secretary, Chess Association of Thrissur with the help of various people including T.J.Suresh Kumar of ICF, Chennai. In the opening ceremony, the founder Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, 83-year old A.V.Sriramulu was given a memento. He was one of the players and also travelled to Thrissur by an unreserved compartment in the train.
Final placings: 1 P.Karthikeyan 8.5/10, 2-4 Ram S Krishnan, P.Konguvel, Preetham Sharma 8 each, 5-8 B.S.Sivanandan, Saptarshi Roy, K.Priyadarshan, M.B.Muralidharan 7.5 each, 9-24 K.Ratnakaran, Anurag Jaiswal, Dusthageer Ibrahim, R.R.Laxman, Syed Anwar Shazuli, A.Sankar, E.P.Nirmal, T.J.Suresh Kumar, Alex Thomas, Nimmy George, Joydeep Dutta, Rupankar Nath, M.Paramasivam, P.K.Suresh, P.Gopalakrishna, A.K.Jagadeesh 7 each.

The 132 player strong TN State U16 and U18 championships organized by Pudukottai District Chess Association was star studded with players who had won FIDE rated tournaments (P. Shyam Nikhil and Dustagir Ibrahim) and Asian titles (S. Nitin). A.L. Palaniappan, the secretary of the district left no stone unturned in the successful organization of the championships. The U16 boys category was a well contested one. Kunal of Cuddalore district was leading with 6.5 points at the end of the seventh round. He was humbled by N. Surendran of Thiruvallur district in the eighth round and Dustagir defeated N. Lokesh of Krishnagiri district to emerge as the sole leader with 7 points and he needed a draw in the ninth and final round to win the title. But Dustagir was made to bite the dust by Ramnath Bhuvanesh of Chennai, the winner of the U12 Rapid title at Mannargudi. Kunal subdued A. Nagaarjuna of Sivakasi and equalled Ramnath by scoring 7.5 points. Better progressive score was in favour of Kunal to wrest the title. Excitement was aplenty in the U18 boys event also. Arun Karthik of Chennai was leading with 6.5 points at the end of the eighth and penultimate round and four players were trailing behind by half a point. Arun had to settle for a draw, whereas three 6 pointers won, leading to a four way tie for the first place. Shyam Nikhil of Megha Chess Academy was declared as winner due to a better progression. Shyam, with a rating as high as 2375 had recently won a FIDE rated tournament at Jaipur, ahead of 10 IMs. The U16 Girls tournament was also nothing short of excitement until the last round. At the end of the penultimate round, C.H. Savetha of Salem was on 6.5 points, whereas A. Sithalatchumi of Madurai and P. Uthra of Thiruvallur were on 6. R. Visalatchi of Sivakasi held Savetha to a draw and the other two players won their final games, resulting in a tie between the three players. Again progressive score was applied to resolve the tie, which was in favour of Sithalatchumi. Savetha and Uthra finished in that order. J. Saranya, winner of the U12 Rapid title at Mannargudi added one more to her kit by winning the U18 Girls section. She and R. Preethi of Madurai had a neck-to-neck race until the final round and finished on par with 7.5 points. Preethi had to be satisfied with the second place because of a lower progressive score. S. Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand has edged out Veslin Topalov from the World No 1 spot after winning the Morelia-Linares chess tournament.
A final-round draw with Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine after 31 moves not only saw the Indian superstar regaining the trophy after nine years, but also becoming the FIDE Numero Uno for the first time in his illustrious career.
After notching up 8.5 points out of a possible 14, Anand ended a full point clear of his nearest rival, Norway's Magnus Carlsen, who lost to Peter Leko of Hungary to finish on 7.5 points.
Anand had little work to do in the final game against Ivanchuk as the latter could not get much with his white pieces in the Queen's Indian defence game. The queens got traded early in the middle game and even as Ivanchuk had an optical advantage, Anand was always within the boundary of a draw. The peace was signed after 31 moves.
Final results: 1. Viswanathan Anand (India) – 8,5 points 2. Alexander Morozevich (Russia) – 7,5 points 3. Magnus Carlsen (Norway) – 7,5 points 4. Peter Svidler – 7 points 5. Levon Aronian (Armenia) – 7 points 6. Vessily Ivanchuk (Ukraine) – 6,5 points 7. Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) – 6 points 8. Peter Leko (Hungary) – 6 points

Chess grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran was given an enthusiastic reception when he returned to Chennai after the Indian team won the gold medal at the Doha Asian Games. Sasikiran was the captain of the three member Indian team which comprised of P.Harikrishna and Koneru Humpy.
Among those who received Sasikiran at the Chennai airport were J.C.D.Prabhakar, Vice President of the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, AICF Secretary D.V.Sundar who arrived earlier the day from Qatar, TNSCA, Chennai and Kanchi District chess association officials and chess players. IM Manuel Aaron, coach of the Indian team also returned along with Sasikiran.
Large number of people were present. I think there were more people to receive him this time than when he became a grandmaster and returned to Chennai; observed his mother Jayshree Krishnan.
Speaking to the media on arrival from Qatar, Sasikiran said the intensive training camp organised by the AICF at Chennai with GM Lev Psakhis helped. ;As a team we had excellent coordination which was a crucial factor in the team winning, said Sasikiran. Asked about his performance in the rapid chess, Sasikiran said, that by the time he came to form the event ended.
Though India was the top seed in the team championship, Sasikirans personal score of 8 points from 9 games with key victories over his great rivals like Bu Xiangzhi of China and former World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan is the talk of the chess world.

The victory in the Mikhail Tal Memorial Blitz Tournament at Moscow on November 19 should compensate for not winning the World Blitz earlier this year in Israel. The field here was a shade stronger than the World Bllitz. Anand was at his best scoring 23/34 in the 18-player double round robin blitz event that was held at Moscow. The time control was five minutes per game plus 2 seconds per move. Anand won by a wide two-point margin.
Linares champion, world cup champion and the man who led Armenia to the Olympiad triumph this year, Levon Aronian finished second. Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan finished third. Blitz chess was a treat to the chess fans in Moscow. The prize fund was 100,000 dollars. The remarkable feature of Anand who will turn 37 next month is his consistency be it classical chess or rapid or blitz.
The tournament is a tribute to the former world champion Mikhail Tal who passed away in 1992. Had he lived today he would have been 70 this month. Tal and Fischer (his chess part) were Anand's favourite players when he grew up.
Final placings: 1 V.Anand (Ind) 23/34, 2 L.Aronian (Arm) 21, 3-4 T.Radjabov (Aze), P.Svidler (Rus) 20.5 each, 5 R.Ponomariov (Ukr) 19.5, 6-8 A.Morozevich (Rus), A.Grischuk (Rus), B.Gelfand (Isr) 18 each, 9-10 N.Carlsen (Nor), A.Karpov (Rus) 17.5 each, 11-13 S.Karjakin (Ukr), S.Mamedyarov (Aze), Judit Polgar (Hun) 17 each, 14 P.Leko (Hun) 16.5, 15 D.Jakovenko (Rus) 15.5, 16 V.Bologan (Mda) 10.5, 17 A.Timofeev (Rus) 10, 18 B.Jobava (Geo) 9.
