Harshita holds WGM Soumya Swaminathan in the 3rd round
Andhra Pradesh youngster Harshita Guddanti held top seed Women Grandmaster Soumya Swaminathan in the third round of the ongoing 46th National Women Chess Championship-2019 organised by Chettinad Public School, Karaikudi.
Playing Velimirovic Attack variation of Sicilian Defence, Harshita and Soumya exchanged the pieces at regular intervals to sign the peace treaty after 52 moves when both players left with one rook and king over the board.
A pack of five players including former Asian Champion Bhakti Kulkarni and five time national champion Bhagyashree Thipsay are now leading the table with perfect score at the end of third round matches. Bhakti defeated Saranya J of Tamil Nadu while Bhagyashree got better off Sunayasakta Satpathy of Odisha. The other leaders are Nandhidhaa PV of Tamil Nadu, Vantika Agrawal of Delhi and Nityata Jain of Madhya Pradesh. Nandhidhaa had an easy outing against Meenal Gupta of Jammu & Kashmir while Vantika and Nitayata outwitted Bala Kannamma and Sunyuktha CMN of Tamil Nadu respectively. In other important encounter in the 3rd round, third seed Divya Deshmukh of Maharashtra satisfied with half point against seasoned campaigner Kiran Manisha Mohanty of LIC
Before the start of third round, players celebrated the International Chess Day with Chettinad Public School, Vice Chairman Mr. Arun Kumar.
Earlier in the second round, Jyothsna L shocked fifth seed and teammate Srija Seshadri while Nandhi Saripallli outwitted eighth seed Pratyusha Bodda of Andhra Pradesh.
Six time champion S Vijayalakshmi escaped from the claws of defeat to split the point with Saranya Y and Sanskriti Goyal of Uttar Pradesh held three time national champion Mary Ann Gomes to creditable draw.
